Overview

Plunging into the PMP: A deeper dive into substance use and healthcare

Millions of controlled substances are prescribed each year in the U.S. and overdose deaths are still occurring.  This activity will review the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program, the current atmosphere surrounding opioid prescribing, and update participants on documentation, interventions, and the newest 2022 CDC clinical practice guidelines.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will understand the laws and regulations surrounding the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and the current atmosphere in the United States surrounding Substance Use Disorder and Opioids for Pain.
  2. Participants will have a basic understanding of the 2022 CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain.
  3. Participants will be able to demonstrate best practices for operating the PMP, documenting PMP interventions, and discussing these interventions with patients.

K. Ashley Garling Pharm D

Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Garling graduated Rho Chi with honors from the MCV/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. She is now a clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, serving as a communication, media, and patient engagement specialist. Dr. Garling is the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI for research projects in community pharmacy settings spanning telehealth, HIV PrEP, mental health, patient counseling, and medication adherence. She is the president of the Capital Area Pharmacist Association, and is a Public Policy Council Member of the Texas Pharmacist Association.
