Position Description

The Department of Nursing, in the brand-new School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SNHS) at Providence College, (also referred to as “the College” or “PC”), is excited to offer a unique full time faculty role as a clinical instructor. The SNHS seeks to fill three full time clinical faculty positions to begin in the Spring 2025 semester (i.e., January 2025). We are seeking applicants with clinical teaching experience and clinical practice experience in the medical/surgical nursing specialty. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate nursing students in the clinical component of their medical/ surgical nursing course. The semester workload will be an average of three (3) medical/surgical clinical groups each semester at area hospitals/health centers. As part of our joint appointment model, clinical appointments can be secured for successful candidates at one of our many practice partner settings. Successful candidates will also participate in the department’s governance as a member of the Providence College Nursing Faculty Committee and will maintain an active Rhode Island nursing license and professional practice within the medical surgical nursing specialty.

This is an exciting and historic opportunity to join PC’s newly established School of Nursing and Health Sciences and shape an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum for the next generation of students entering nursing. Construction is underway on the 153,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art Ben Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences that will house the School of Nursing and Health Sciences existing and future undergraduate and graduate programs. This one-of-a-kind facility opening in early 2025, features the latest classroom design and technologies and showcases expansive clinical simulation and research facilities, including standardized patient exam rooms, an eight-bed simulation center, and two large skills labs that double as teaching – learning classrooms where active teaching-learning methods are utilized to ensure competency of skill attainment. A student career education and advising center, along with conference and meeting space, will be included as part of the inspiring resources intended for the next generation of healthcare providers, faculty, and staff. This is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to collaborate with other PC nursing faculty while also maintaining their nursing practice. As the student body at Providence College grows increasingly diverse, we have a strong preference for candidates who demonstrate a deep commitment to and proven ability in support of the success of students from historically marginalized economic, social, and cultural groups.

These three nursing clinical faculty positions will report to the Chair of the Department of Nursing. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the clinical setting, such as hospitals or local health care facilities, at the undergraduate level. The candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation and assessment of curriculum, student advising, and service to the college as a full-time faculty member.

Candidates with an earned master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and certification or willingness to become certified in medical/surgical nursing are strongly encouraged to apply. An active unencumbered license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island or eligibility to apply for such, minimum of five years of professional nursing clinical experience in the medical surgical specialty, knowledge and skills related to effective teaching methodology, and certification as a Certified Academic Clinical Nurse Educator (CNEcl) or willing to obtain, will be looked upon favorably by the search committee. Previous experience teaching medical surgical nursing in an undergraduate nursing program and supervising students during clinical rotations in a hospital or health care setting is strongly preferred.

Applicants should apply online at the College’s career site at https://careers.providence.edu and submit a cover letter, cuticulum vitae, teaching statement/philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. For additional information, please contact Dr. Nancy Meedzan, Professor and Department of Nursing Chair at nmeedzan@providence.edu. A review of applications will continue until the positions are filled.
